We're excited to announce that we'll be hosting a talk followed by Q&A by Prof Giannis Stamatellos entitled 'Socratic AI: Philosophical Origins and Applications'. It will take place on Tuesday W2 (6th May), starting at 7.00 pm at the Kloppenburg Room of Exeter Cohen Quad (located on Walton St, OX1 2HG). "Socratic AI" is a recent development in artificial intelligence inspired by Socrates' maieutic method of inquiry, a form of philosophical midwifery that uses probing questions to challenge assumptions and foster self-examination. By adapting the Socratic method to AI conversational agents and prompt engineering, Socratic AI aims to enhance critical thinking and moral motivation through reflective questioning, particularly in educational settings, by promoting self-reflection and dialogue. This presentation will explore its origins in classical philosophy and its evolution into modern Socratic methodologies, with a particular focus on its application in combating disinformation. It will highlight how Socratic AI empowers citizens to counter misleading narratives through critical examination and skeptical interaction.
